What Is an Emergency?

An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from police, the fire department or emergency medical services.

Fire

A structure fire, vehicle fire, wildfire or any other uncontrolled fire.

Crime

A crime that is occurring now or a situation involving an immediate threat to people or property.

Serious Crash

A vehicle crash, especially when someone is injured or there is an immediate roadway hazard.

Medical Emergency

Someone is unconscious, not breathing normally, experiencing chest pain, bleeding uncontrollably or having another serious medical emergency.

Be Prepared to Answer Questions

The call-taker will ask questions to determine what help is needed and where responders should be sent.

Be ready to provide:

The location of the emergency, including the street address or the nearest identifiable location.
The phone number from which you are calling.
The nature of the emergency.
A description of the people, vehicles, fire, injuries or symptoms involved.

During the Call

Remain calm, listen carefully and follow the call-taker’s instructions.

Answer All Questions

Provide clear and complete answers, even if emergency responders have already been dispatched.

Follow the Instructions

The call-taker may provide step-by-step instructions for CPR, choking, first aid or other emergency care until help arrives.

Stay on the Line

Do not hang up until the call-taker tells you it is safe to end the call.
