Firefighter

This class stays in constant preparation for and responds to all medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials accidents, and fire emergencies; performs public education services; and practices and trains for emergency situations.

Fire Cadet

This is an entry-level position to train to become a firefighter, involving academic and on-the-job training and development in preparation to become State-certified. Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements that may be established by county or department rules. Work performance is reviewed through observation by an assigned mentor and weekly evaluations are completed. Applicants must be at least 18-years old.

Volunteer Firefighter

Volunteer firefighters operate and maintain the fire station’s firefighting equipment and keep the station ready to react to any emergency situation in the community it serves. In addition to their time spent at the station, volunteer firefighters are on call for emergency response 24 hours a day.

As a volunteer firefighter, you will receive training to manage a variety of emergencies: structure and wildland fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and hazardous materials spills. Volunteers also perform rescue duties during natural disasters, such as floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. Volunteer firefighters receive ongoing training in the latest emergency response techniques to technology.

Persons interested in applying may also have out-of-state EMT or Paramedic certification. Firefighter applicants should contact the Florida Department of Health, EMS Division, to get more information on obtaining Florida certifications.

Florida Firefighter Minimum Standards Certification

In the State of Florida, a person must hold a Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance (Florida Firefighter 2) before they can be employed as a career firefighter. Without the Florida Firefighter 2 certification Escambia County will not accept an application for a career firefighter.

A person with out-of-state firefighter certification will contact the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training to determine if their certification can be converted to Florida Firefighter 2.
