Escambia County’s Brownfield Redevelopment Program was originally established in 1998 to encourage the redevelopment of Escambia County’s designated Brownfield areas, including Escambia County’s designated redevelopment districts. Brownfield areas are defined as, “one or more contiguous sites where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of may be complicated by actual or perceived environmental contamination”, according to the Brownfield Redevelopment Act, F.S. 376.77-376.85.

These areas contain valuable pieces of real estate which may remain underutilized due to the perception of potential contamination. The Brownfield Redevelopment Program promotes productive reuse of Brownfield sites by providing services which offer financial and technical assistance in conducting environmental site assessments, and remediation activities, and promote redevelopment.

A brownfield is a piece of real estate that has, or is perceived to have, environmental contamination. Because of the presence, or potential presence, of environmental issues the property is usually abandoned or idle. Brownfields are potentially valuable real estate that may need some environmental cleanup before they can be put back into productive use.
