FDOH: Residents Urged to Protect Against Animal Bites, Rabies Exposure

The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County urges residents and visitors to protect themselves from the risk of rabies exposure by avoiding contact with wild and stray animals. A raccoon recently captured in Escambia County, Florida has been confirmed to carry the rabies virus.

Rhett Road Closure Notice

Rhett Road between St. Johns Road and Scarlett Lane will be closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday, June 12 at 7 a.m. The roadway closure is expected to remain in effect for approximately seven days. Marine Resources and UWF Deploy Argo Reef

Escambia County's Marine Resources Division and the University of West Florida deployed the Argo Reef in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, June 7, approximately 12.5 nautical miles southeast of Pensacola Pass. The Argo Reef consists of the university's steel dive platform, which has been anchored for many years near the Emmanuel Point shipwreck site to support underwater archaeological research.

Escambia County Identifies New Mosquito Species Within County

The Escambia County Mosquito Control Division has identified a new species of mosquito within the county called Aedes japonicus, or Asian bush mosquito. The Asian bush mosquito can also be found in Santa Rosa, Walton, Okaloosa, Bay and Leon Counties, and with the migration into Escambia, it brings the known list of mosquito species in our county to 73.
