Today, Sept. 5, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Gulf of Mexico Program awarded the Bay Area Resource Council a $2 million cooperative agreement to establish the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program. The project is the result of several years of collaboration and is the first Estuary Program in Northwest Florida.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Escambia County until 7 p.m. today. According to NWS, radar indicated thunderstorms will produce heavy rain across the warned area throughout the day. Up to 10 inches of rain has already fallen between Tuesday and today, and flash flood conditions are expected to continue. Some areas may see a two-day total of over 15 inches of rainfall.

On the forecast track, the center of Gordon will emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by early afternoon, reach the warning area along the central Gulf Coast by late Tuesday or Tuesday night. It is still too early to determine what direct impacts the Tropical Storm Gordon might have on Escambia County and Northwest Florida, but according to the National Weather Service in Mobile strong wind gusts, flash flood conditions and deadly rip currents are expected.
