  • EPA Awards $2 Million to Establish Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program

    Today, Sept. 5, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Gulf of Mexico Program awarded the Bay Area Resource Council a $2 million cooperative agreement to establish the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program. The project is the result of several years of collaboration and is the first Estuary Program in Northwest Florida.

  • Flash Flood Watch Remains

    The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Escambia County until 7 p.m. today. According to NWS, radar indicated thunderstorms will produce heavy rain across the warned area throughout the day. Up to 10 inches of rain has already fallen between Tuesday and today, and flash flood conditions are expected to continue. Some areas may see a two-day total of over 15 inches of rainfall.

    ECAT Route 47 will be detoured due to flooding on Massachusetts Avenue. ECAT staff will be stationed along Massachusetts Avenue to assist passengers with the detoured route. ECAT will return full service to Route 47 when it is safe to do so.

    Tropical Storm Gordon is forecast for the center to make landfall along the north-central Gulf Coast within the hurricane warning area this evening or tonight. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph with higher gusts. Gordon could still become a hurricane before landfall.

    The Escambia County Board of County Commission First Public Hearing for Consideration of Tentative Budget for Fiscal Year 2018/2019 scheduled for today, Sept. 4 at 5:31 p.m. has been rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Gordon. The meeting will now be held Monday, Sept. 10 at 5:01 p.m. in the board chambers of the Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building, found on the first floor of 221 Palafox Place.

    The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners welcomes William R. Powell as the new Director of Corrections, with responsibilities to include oversight of the Escambia County Jail, Community Corrections Division and Road Prison. Powell joins Escambia County from Orlando where he served as correctional major at Orange County Corrections Department. Tuesday, Sept. 4, marked Powell's first day on the job.

    On the forecast track, the center of Gordon will emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by early afternoon, reach the warning area along the central Gulf Coast by late Tuesday or Tuesday night. It is still too early to determine what direct impacts the Tropical Storm Gordon might have on Escambia County and Northwest Florida, but according to the National Weather Service in Mobile strong wind gusts, flash flood conditions and deadly rip currents are expected.

    Fifteen Escambia County Corrections, Fire Rescue and EMS staff graduated from the 39th Crisis Intervention Training course today, Aug. 31. The graduation ceremony was held at the Escambia County Public Safety Building on W Street, recognized the participants with a CIT pin and certificate. Escambia County hosted the training with agencies from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties participating.
