Escambia County collected and disposed of more than 64 tons (128,280 pounds) of debris during the April 12 Wedgewood/Rolling Hills Neighborhood Cleanup, as part of the county's ongoing effort to help keep local neighborhoods and communities clean and safe. The event allowed residents to leave items at the curb to be disposed of free of charge by the county and partnering agencies.

Pensacola Beach Lifeguards will host a tryout event Saturday, May 13 for individuals looking for a challenging, rewarding and exciting job with a starting pay of $14.57 per hour. The tryouts will take place at 9 a.m. at the University of West Florida Aquatic Center, located at 11000 University Parkway, Bldg. 72.

Visitors and residents are asked to be patient when driving, wear and reapply sunscreen, drink plenty of water and only go in the water if you are strong swimmer. No matter your swimming level, it is always best to swim near a lifeguard.

Thursday brought winds upwards of 25 mph in much of the three-county area and the forecast calls for extremely low humidity through Sunday. When combined, these factors dry out smaller vegetation such as grass, shrubs and small limbs and debris that while great for backyard burning of yard trash, can increase the chances of a wildfire.
