Residents at a local nursing home will be getting Christmas presents thanks to the Westside Branch Library Loopy Loomers group. The group, made up of seven area women, decided to create gifts for the residents at Emerald Gardens Assisted Living Facility after hearing that many of the residents do not normally receive any presents for the holidays.

The Escambia County’s Natural Resources Conservation Division is preparing for a prescribed burn in the Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve of approximately 70 acres. The burn is expected to be conducted one day between the time frame of Wednesday, Dec. 14 and Friday, Dec. 30.

A fire on the 8900 block of Mobile Highway represents the fourth red bulb on the “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety wreath. Escambia County Emergency Communications received the call at 4:32 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 from a resident of the home reporting a fire in the ceiling.

One hundred smoke detectors were installed by Escambia County Fire Rescue in 71 homes in the Lakewood area today, the largest number ever installed by county fire crews in one day. On Saturday, Dec. 10, volunteers from First Baptist Church of Warrington and ECFR firefighters walked the neighborhood, knocking on doors and offering to install a new smoke detector with a 10-year battery at no charge.

The Escambia County Waste Services Department will host the next Regional Roundup Saturday, Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. until noon at the Perdido Landfill, located at 13009 Beulah Road. The Freeze Watch will be in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning, with early morning lows Saturday forecast from 27-32 degrees.
