Halloweed! Helping to Report Invasive Plants in the Pensacola Bay Area

Published Oct 5, 2017

UF/IFAS Escambia and Santa Rosa County Extension are seeking volunteers for "Halloweed," an invasive plant identifying and reporting program. Modeled after the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, volunteers will be asked to search for and report invasive plants in our area during the week of Oct. 28 through Nov. 4.

The target species for 2017 is cogongrass; an invasive plant found in pastures, roadsides, ditches and even barrier islands. To volunteer, citizens need to be familiar with cogongrass and how to report locations on EDDMapS. Sea Grant Agents from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will be providing basic training on the following dates:

  • 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10 - Navarre Visitors Center, 8543 Navarre Parkway in Navarre
  • 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10 - Santa Rosa County Extension Office, 6263 Dogwood Drive in Milton
  • 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17 - Escambia County Extension Office, 3740 Stefani Road in Cantonment
  • 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24 - Escambia County Extension Office, 3740 Stefani Road in Cantonment
Registration for the training classes is not required. Contact Chris Verlinde, 850-623-3868 or Rick O'Connor, 850-475-5230 for more information.
