Escambia County Animal Services is pleased to welcome a new veterinarian to the animal shelter staff, who will be responsible for the care of animals and ensuring they are spayed, neutered, healthy and ready for adoption. Dr. Johnna Lee joins the Escambia County Animal Shelter from Hartselle, Alabama, where she most recently worked as the chief of staff at Banfield Pet Hospital in Decatur, Alabama.

Escambia County received a report yesterday of a dark mass within Gulf Islands National Seashore on Perdido Key, which a National Park Service biologist has evaluated and determined to be a naturally occurring peat mass. Though it may sometimes look similar to a tar ball or mat, peat is a natural part of the area's ecosystem and is not hazardous, nor is it pollution.

The Escambia County Corrections Department and Jail Division proudly recognized two Jail GED Program graduates with a ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 18 at the Escambia County Jail, celebrating their dedication to achieving educational goals. This marked the first formal graduation ceremony hosted by Escambia County to recognize individuals housed at the jail who receive their GED diplomas.

The Escambia County Jail, Road Prison and Work Release Center received notification that they have again passed both the Florida Model Jail Standards and Medical Unit Inspections, with inspectors finding no serious violations. The Florida Model Jail Standards are minimum standards that jails across Florida must meet to ensure the constitutional rights of those incarcerated are upheld.
