An inmate from the Escambia County Road Prison escaped while on work duty today, Friday, Nov. 3 at approximately 10:30 a.m. Philip James Hammac ran while the work crew and supervisors were picking up supplies in Ellyson Industrial Park. Deputies and K-9 teams from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the road prison are searching the area.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected a proposal by the Bay Area Resource Council and Escambia County to establish a new Estuary Program for Pensacola and Perdido Bays. The $2 million grant is funded through the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council as part of the RESTORE Act and will be hosted by Escambia County.

Escambia County Animal Services is pleased to welcome a new veterinarian to the animal shelter staff, who will be responsible for the care of animals and ensuring they are spayed, neutered, healthy and ready for adoption. Dr. Johnna Lee joins the Escambia County Animal Shelter from Hartselle, Alabama, where she most recently worked as the chief of staff at Banfield Pet Hospital in Decatur, Alabama.

Escambia County received a report yesterday of a dark mass within Gulf Islands National Seashore on Perdido Key, which a National Park Service biologist has evaluated and determined to be a naturally occurring peat mass. Though it may sometimes look similar to a tar ball or mat, peat is a natural part of the area's ecosystem and is not hazardous, nor is it pollution.
