On Sept. 23, the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation announced the award of $6.4 million to Escambia County to partially fund the construction of the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project. A 30,000 pound food giveaway will be held next Saturday, Sept. 25 in Cantonment. The event will take place on a first come, first served basis from 8-10 a.m. at Carver Park, 208 Webb Street. The giveaway is sponsored by Rep. On Monday, Sept. 20, Escambia County Fire Rescue firefighter Gary Diamond was posthumously honored as Florida's Career Firefighter of the Year during the 2021 Fire Service Awards. On Dec. 26, Diamond was shot and killed in the front yard of his Molino home.

Residents of Cantonment/Farm Hill will have the opportunity to dispose of yard debris and other items free of charge Friday, Sept. 24 during the Neighborhood Cleanup in District 5. Only residents in the designated cleanup area are able to participate in the neighborhood cleanup. Items left at the curb outside of the cleanup area will not be collected.

The Peanut Butter Challenge, UF/IFAS Extension’s annual jar collection for local food pantries that launched in the Florida Panhandle in 2012, is again spreading statewide this year. Coordinated by UF/IFAS Extension faculty, staff and volunteers, the competition among counties – for bragging rights only – was conceived as a way to feed hungry families ahead of the holidays in addition to promoting a Florida-grown crop.
