    A death occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, at the Escambia County Main Jail.   • RESTORE Update: Community Input Sought By October 30

    The RESTORE Act Advisory Committee, formed by Escambia County to develop recommendations for short-and long-term recovery strategies post-BP oil disaster, has worked diligently with County staff and the consultant firm Dewberry to include public input into the development of a draft Needs Assessment document (attached), a process that has been ongoing for several months. Now that the Needs Assessment is in the final stages, community members have an opportunity, once again, to take a few minutes to review the draft document and provide feedback.

  • The West Florida Public Library System welcomes "The Big Read" author Tim O'Brien to Escambia County

    In May it was proudly announced that the West Florida Public Library System had received a grant of $15,000 to host the Big Read program. \r\n\r\nThe West Florida Public Library is one of 77 nonprofit organizations to receive a grant to host The Big Read project between September 2014 and June 2015. The Big Read in Escambia County will focus on The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien’s novel about the lasting impact of the Vietnam War. O’Brien will come to Escambia County to launch The Big Read activities in October. \r\n

  • Emergency Repair Work on Nine Mile Road

    Emergency repairs on U.S. 90 (Nine Mile Road) between the Escambia River Bridge and Scenic Highway will resume today, Monday, October 27. Crews will begin constructing the temporary diversion to maintain and shift traffic as they complete the necessary repair work. Drivers can expect nighttime lane restrictions, narrowed travel lanes and a reduced speed limit today through Wednesday, October 29, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Local Option Sales Tax: Parks and Community Centers

    Escambia County has no shortage of parks and recreational activities available to its residents. In fact, Escambia County is home to more than 100 parks and 16 community centers, each offering a vast array of resources and activities for all ages. From 2006 to the end of 2017, approximately $41 million of funds earned from the Local Option Sales Tax will have been invested in these amenities.

  • County Begins Another Improvement Project on Pensacola Beach

    Escambia County issued a notice to proceed on a large-scale landscape improvement project on Via DeLuna Drive. The project will include planting more than 2,000 palm trees, as well as various types of grasses, groundcover and flowering plants in the medians. The enhanced roadway, which will also feature sidewalks and bicycle lanes, is funded by the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA) and managed by Escambia County through an interlocal agreement. This latest project is one of three enhancements projects - either currently under construction or set to begin construction later this year. The total investment in improvements to Pensacola Beach totals more than $1.65 million.

    As the election on Tuesday, November 4, approaches Escambia County citizens are encouraged to be informed about the proposals and candidates on the ballot.\r\n\r\nLong-time County residents may recall that Local Option Sales Tax was first approved by Escambia County voters in 1992. It was again approved in 1997 and 2006 with the current round expiring in 2017. In an effort to engage citizens about the details of the already existing Local Option Sales Tax, the County has hosted a series of public meetings throughout its five commission districts. \r\n\r\n
