Escambia County collected and disposed of approximately 39 tons (78,000 pounds) of debris during the District 3 Ensley South Neighborhood Cleanup in June, as part of the county's ongoing effort to help keep local neighborhoods and communities clean and safe. The event allowed residents to leave items at the curb to be disposed of free of charge by the county and partnering agencies.

The Escambia County Board of Commissioners will hold several meetings Thursday, July 8. Agenda Review and Community Redevelopment Agency will begin at 9 a.m. Public Forum will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the BCC Regular Meeting at 5:30 p.m. All meetings will take place in the board chambers of the Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building, located on the first floor of 221 Palafox Place.

Escambia County’s mobile command center will stay at the Surfside condo collapse through July 30. The state requested use of the vehicle as a command post to use the search and recovery efforts. The command center, nicknamed “THOR” was set to return from Surfside today Wednesday, July 7, but it will now remain through the end of the month. The emergency management employee returned from his deployment and will return to South Florida to retrieve THOR.

In an effort to reduce the mosquito population in Escambia County, the Mosquito Control Division has filed a "Notice of Intent" to proceed with fogging missions Wednesday, July 7 in Commission Districts 1, 3 and 5. Mission hours vary, but typically occur in the evening hours from 6-9:30 p.m.

The Escambia County Sea Turtle Patrol discovered two loggerhead nests were vandalized on Pensacola Beach over the Fourth of July weekend. One nest enclosure was destroyed, while another nest showed signs of digging. Despite the disturbances, the eggs appear to be unharmed. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office were notified, but enforcement is difficult without additional information. Anyone with information about these activities should report them to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922.

The Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program (PPBEP) is pleased
to announce the opening of the 2021-2022 Community Grant Program. The Community Grant Program awards $250,000 in total funding to help restore and protect our waters. Award amounts range from $10,000 to $50,000. Local governments or nonstate entities (educational institutions and 501(c)3s) are eligible to submit a proposal for projects located within the Perdido and/or Pensacola watershed within Escambia, Santa Rosa or Okaloosa counties. Only residents in the designated cleanup area are able to participate in the neighborhood cleanup. Items left at the curb outside of the cleanup area will not be collected. The Florida Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Trustee Implementation Group has approved its Final Restoration Plan 2 and Environmental Assessment. The Plan includes 18 selected projects that address five natural resource restoration types: Habitat Projects on Federally Managed Lands, Sea Turtles, Marine Mammals, Birds and Provide and Enhance Recreational Opportunities.

Escambia County set a record for the second busiest day motorists went to Pensacola Beach via the Bob Sikes bridge on Saturday, June 26 with 22,267 vehicles counted. This count was more than any day in 2019 or 2020. The busiest day was July 1, 2017 with 22,555 vehicles.
