The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners will hold two meetings Thursday, Oct. 6. Public forum begins at 4:30 p.m. and the regular meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Both meetings will take place in the board chambers of the Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building, located on the first floor of 221 Palafox Place.

A small wildfire damaged one acre of Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve Thursday afternoon. The fire is fully contained, but visitors should avoid the fire area, located off of Patton Drive. Lingering hot spots and smoke will be present throughout the weekend.

From now until Oct. 31, the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare will offer free adoptions for all animals currently housed at the Animal Welfare and Adoption Center. Licensing fees will also be waived during this time.

The Peanut Butter Challenge is an annual jar collection for local food pantries hosted by UF/IFAS Extension and Florida A&M University Cooperative Extension. Launched in the Florida Panhandle counties in 2012, it is again spreading statewide this year.

The Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare will host an "Adoptapalooza" event Sunday, Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Animal Welfare and Adoption Center, located at 200 W. Fairfield Drive. This free event is open to the public, their pets, and anyone who has been considering adopting.
