The Florida Department of Transportation has announced that eastbound traffic on U.S. 98 (Garden Street) at Alcaniz Street will be restricted to one lane from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 and Thursday, Dec. 6 as crews perform drainage work and make repairs to the roadway.

The Florida Department of Transportation announced today that the overnight work scheduled on the Escambia Bay Bridge for Monday, December 3 has been rescheduled. Eastbound traffic on I-10 across the Escambia Bay Bridge will encounter alternating and intermittent lane restrictions on Tuesday, December 4 from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. Wednesday, December 5 as crews perform joint repair work.

Solid Waste Management will host three recycling workshops over the holidays to give children a learning experience in recycling. Offered on Thursday, December 27, Wednesday, January 2 and Thursday, January 3, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m, the workshops are held at the Perdido Landfill, 13009 Beulah Road, Cantonment. The cost of the workshops is a donation of one pair of new or gently used shoes to be given to Soles4Soles.

The Florida Local Environmental Resources Agencies (FLERA) presented Escambia County Commissioner Grover C. Robinson, IV with the Outstanding Environmental Leadership Award during the 2012 FLERA Annual Award Luncheon. The Outstanding Environmental Leadership Award is presented to a local government elected official that has displayed outstanding leadership qualities among their peers on environmental issues.

One of the most frequent questions our staff receives regarding nourishment of Perdido Key is: How will Escambia County pay for this? This is a great question, particularly since beach nourishment is expensive, and must be repeated periodically. However, there is currently $1.6 million in funding available from FEMA as a result of the impacts of Hurricane Gustav. Escambia County is pursuing the potential for additional funding as a result of the the BP/Deepwater Horizon spill settlement through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process or through Federal Clean Water Act fines.
