As the election on Tuesday, November 4, approaches Escambia County citizens are encouraged to be informed about the proposals and candidates on the ballot.\r\n\r\nLong-time County residents may recall that Local Option Sales Tax was first approved by Escambia County voters in 1992. It was again approved in 1997 and 2006 with the current round expiring in 2017. In an effort to engage citizens about the details of the already existing Local Option Sales Tax, the County has hosted a series of public meetings throughout its five commission districts. \r\n\r\n

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that Escambia County and the Pensacola Chamber were awarded $266,000 through Florida’s Defense Infrastructure and Reinvestment Grant Programs. On September 22, MyEscambia.com asked residents to complete an online survey to gauge the communities' thoughts and ideas about traffic calming and pedestrian safety issues faced by County residents. It was the fourth in a series of articles, videos, public meetings and surveys developed to facilitate an ongoing dialogue about issues of concern to our community. The results of the first three surveys, “Envision Escambia 2028: Tell Us What’s Important to You,” “Envision Escambia 2028: Traffic Safety” and “Envision Escambia 2028: Storm Water Drainage” have already been published. Two additional surveys: one regarding residents’ satisfaction with Public Safety services and one concerning parks and community centers are now being conducted. Since being approved by voters in 2006, the third installment of the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) has helped Escambia County’s Public Safety Department drastically improve its equipment and capabilities. Thanks to the Local Option Sales Tax, the Escambia County Fire Department has been able to upgrade its equipment and vehicles, as well as expand fire stations, and even paid for the construction of the new Perdido Key Fire Station, which opened in 2014. During the final three years of the current LOST, Escambia County’s Public Safety will be able to begin construction on new fire stations for Beulah and Osceola. These will replace aging facilities with modern buildings housing life saving fire and rescue equipment.\r\n

Since its inception, more Local Option Sales Tax funds have been allocated to improve transportation – including dirt road paving and road widening – than on any other project category. Over the next few years, that investment into critical infrastructure will continue with almost $50 million in transportation projects slated for completion by 2018. By the end of LOST III in December 2017, more than half Local Option Sales Tax revenues, or $215.5 million, will have been spent to construct and improve new highways and drainage throughout the County. This investment not only makes for a smoother commute and improves the economic health of Escambia County; it has also very likely saved lives.
