Ty Jones was joined by his family, District 4 Commissioner Robert Bender and Engineering staff for his Employee of the Month proclamation at the Nov. 2 BCC meeting.
The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to recognize Ty Jones, Toll Specialist at the Bob Sikes Toll Plaza in the Transportation and Traffic Operations division of the Engineering department, as the November 2023 Employee of the Month. The board recognized Ty’s selection at the Nov. 2 BCC meeting.
Ty joined Escambia County full-time after completing the Summer Youth Employment Program in 2022. He worked as a student intern in the Transportation and Traffic Operations division during his time in the program. Once he completed the program, Ty interviewed for a vacancy in the division and obtained a full-time position less than a year after graduating high school. Ty was recently promoted to Toll Specialist after serving as the lead toll technician since February 2023.
In his role, he is responsible for the daily operations of the Bob Sikes Toll Plaza on Pensacola Beach, overseeing supervisory, administrative, customer service and maintenance functions. He has taken on additional duties with an eager attitude, including training two temporary employees on servicing and responding to customer inquiries with past account issues. In addition, Ty has been recognized by citizens at the toll plaza for his helpfulness and ability to address their concerns and issues.
Recently, Ty handled a malfunction with the Toll-by-Plate system with ease. After the system malfunctioned, requiring one of the lanes to close, Ty worked efficiently with the contractor to switch the system to another computer. Ty’s quick actions prevented a significant traffic backup and loss of revenue at the Bob Sikes Toll Plaza.
“Ty displays an unmatched competency and enthusiasm in handling customer issues,” said Joy Blackmon, P.E., Director of Engineering and County Engineer. “He maintains a positive rapport with our contractors, customers and staff and has become an invaluable asset to the Engineering department and the citizens of Escambia County. We are so proud of Ty and his hard work and are blessed to have him on our team.”
Outside of his duties with the county, Ty is a period-correct blacksmith who, in his spare time, crafts small tools and jewelry out of wrought iron using his own furnace, anvil and clamps, some of which are over a century old.
The Board of County Commissioners commends and congratulates Ty on his selection as the November 2023 Employee of the Month.
