"Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety" During 2021 Fire Prevention Week Oct. 3-9

Published Sep 28, 2021
Escambia County Fire Rescue encourages residents to join in observing National Fire Prevention Week 2021 Oct. 3-9, which presents several calls to action to help the public reduce their risk of home fires and keep their families safe. This year's theme is, "Learn The Sounds of Fire Safety."

“Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” works to educate everyone about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make. Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. When an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound – you must take action.

"Residents should have a working smoke alarm and know the types of alarm sounds," said Escambia County Fire and Life Safety Specialist Ray Melton. "A steady sound from a smoke alarm is 'smoke' and a rapid sound is carbon monoxide. A 'chirping' sound indicates a bad battery."

On Friday, Oct. 8, Escambia County Fire Rescue, Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Communications will visit Camp Fire Century Early Learning Center and Walnut Hill Christian School to teach various forms of fire safety to pre-school students.

Since 1922, the National Fire Prevention Association has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. To learn more about Fire Prevention Week and get tips on how to prevent and prepare for home fires, visit firepreventionweek.org.

Escambia County Fire Rescue is available to provide and install smoke detectors free of charge for residents. According to NFPA, a working smoke detector cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. For information about obtaining a home smoke detector, call 850-595-HERO (4376) or request a smoke detector online through the Ask MyEscambia app. City of Pensacola residents may call 850-436-5200 for smoke detector installation assistance.

If you are an Escambia County resident that is hard of hearing, visit the NFPA website for helpful information on how you can prepare your home in the event of a fire.
