Jonathan Owens Completes ICG County Government Education Program

Published Jul 12, 2021

The Institute for County Government (ICG) recognizes Jonathan Owens from Escambia County with successful completion of the County Government Education program developed by the Institute. Owens completed the program along with 71 other graduates from the Certified County Commissioner and Advanced County Commissioner Programs, all of whom were recognized during an awards ceremony held at the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) Annual Conference in Orange County, Fla.

"Education is fundamental and extremely important, and I am thankful for the knowledge gained from this program," said District 2 Aide Jonathan Owens. "ICG's County Government Education program provides valuable information for county staff, and I fully support this institution on its mission to further enhance the leadership skills of county officials."

In its fourth year, the County Government Education program is a voluntary program for county staff based off the Institute’s Certified County Commissioner (CCC) program. Previously, county staff only had the opportunity to audit CCC workshops without the ability to track their participation or progression.

“During its first year, we were extremely encouraged by the involvement of county staff and their eagerness to become more involved in county decisions,” said Institute for County Government Executive Director, Eric Poole. “We look forwarding to growing this program even more to enhance the overall knowledge of Florida county government for county staff.”

Similar to the CCC program, in order to graduate, county staff must take a total of 45 hours of coursework. The program covers a variety of topics such as county government structure and authority, finance and budget, growth management, ethics and Sunshine Law, and the Florida’s legislative process among other classes.

The University of Florida/IFAS Extension sponsors the Institute’s educational programs. For more information about the Institute or the CGE programs and courses, visit the ICG website at https://flicg.org.

For more than 85 years, the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) has represented the diverse interests of Florida’s counties, emphasizing the importance of protecting home rule – the concept that government closest to the people governs best. The Florida Association of Counties helps counties effectively serve and represent Floridians by strengthening and preserving county home rule through advocacy, education and collaboration.
