Bayou Chico Update
A grant agreement with the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council is providing the county $335,510 toward design and permitting for the removal of contaminated sediment in Bayou Chico. The $335,510 is additional funding on top of the $12 million in Restore Act funds from the Gulf Consortium Pot 3 Spill Impact Allocation. The range of expenses is expected to be between $309,000 and $695,000, depending on the level of effort needed for sediment collection and sampling. To reduce the overall costs, Escambia County is expecting to utilize the existing county staff and water quality lab. The next step is to select a qualified design firm through the Request for Proposal process. After the selection is made, the design and permitting phase of this project is expected to take about five years to complete.

Lake Charlene Outfall Project
In hopes of reducing the possible loss of life and property from natural disasters, the Lake Charlene Outfall Project headed by Escambia County was given the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program grant. Due to this, the design consultant for the Lake Charlene Drainage Improvements Project informed Escambia County that it would be moving forward with the grant design based on a 9-inch lake level lowering for the Lake Charlene Drainage Improvements Project rather than the proposed 18-inch level. The project is projected to start at the channel crossing Lake Joanne Drive on the west side and will move eastward at the South 61st Avenue intersection.
