Escambia County Public Notice on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Report

Published Feb 23, 2026

Escambia County has been notified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about a report showing the potential presence of discarded military munitions on the seafloor of some local waterways.

Escambia County is notifying the public of this Army Corps of Engineers report so the public can make informed decisions about conducting maritime activities in the identified areas.

Discarded munitions are commonly found in locations throughout the United States and the world where military activities and training have occurred over the years, also known as Formerly Used Defense Sites, or FUDS. Many of these munitions were dumped at sea long ago, before this practice was discontinued.

The areas identified in the Army Corps of Engineers report include some of Escambia County’s artificial reefs, which were constructed prior to this report’s publication and without any knowledge of the potential presence of discarded munitions. Escambia County has updated the online GIS maps of these artificial reefs to identify these areas for the public, which are available at MyEscambia.com/artificialreefs.
