Escambia County EMS encourages residents to join in recognizing Wednesday, May 21, as Emergency Medical Services for Children Day.
EMSC Day is an annual opportunity to thank EMS clinicians for their dedication to meeting children’s unique health needs and for raising awareness of the need for improving specialized care for children.
“Children have very unique health care needs, and it is incredibly important that we continue to educate ourselves on pediatric-specific skills and protocols, including having the necessary resources to provide quality emergency care for children," said Escambia County Medical Director Dr. Ben Abo.
In recognition of the unique health needs of children, Escambia County EMS has taken the initiative to begin storing honey in their emergency supply kits. It is common for a young child to ingest a small household item like a button battery. When that occurs, honey can be used to slow down the harmful effects a button battery can have on the child’s esophagus.
Dr. Abo performed a demonstration on the negative effects a button battery can have on soft tissues and how honey slows down the acid breakdown. The demonstration can be viewed here.
Escambia County Emergency Medical Services, a division of the Escambia County Department of Public Safety, is a provider of critical care, advanced life support, basic life support and bariatric transports. EMS provides these services to the over 300,000 residents of Escambia County.
