Josh Cartwright Selected as January 2025 Employee of the Month

Published Jan 10, 2025

The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to recognize Josh Cartwright, Field Supervisor in the Transportation and Traffic Operations Division of the Engineering Department, as the January 2025 Employee of the Month. The board adopted a proclamation at the Jan. 9 BCC meeting recognizing Cartwright as the Employee of the Month.

Cartwright recently celebrated six years with Escambia County, beginning his career in the Engineering Department in December 2018. As Field Supervisor, he administers Escambia County’s traffic signal maintenance program. Cartwright oversees two other maintenance personnel to maintain 211 traffic signals, 125 school zone beacons, numerous flashing stop signs, radar speed feedback signs, lighted pedestrian crossings and traffic cameras throughout the county.

“I am truly honored to be recognized as Employee of the Month,” Cartwright said. “This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support and dedication of our incredible team in the Engineering Department. Their hard work, collaboration, and commitment to excellence inspire me every day. I’m grateful to be part of a group that values teamwork and consistently strives to make a positive impact.”

Cartwright also works with Florida Department of Transportation personnel and consultants who assist in signal monitoring and technology upgrades. Through an interlocal agreement and annual reimbursement, the Escambia County Traffic Signal Program maintains 116 FDOT traffic signals throughout the county. Cartwright is the field contact for FDOT projects, providing assistance with traffic signals for FDOT's inspection and construction teams.

Outside of the standard maintenance required of his program, Cartwright routinely helps as needed with special projects that will further advance Escambia County’s traffic signal operations. In early 2023, Cartwright installed a new traffic camera on top of a condo in Perdido Key to show traffic patterns on the south side of the Theo Baars Bridge through the roundabout at Johnson Beach Road. He also stays on top of industry innovations with new equipment and processes, routinely researching new tools to find a balance between cost and effectiveness.

“Josh is an invaluable member of the Engineering Department,” said Director of Engineering and County Engineer Joy Blackmon, P.E. “Maintaining our vast network of traffic signals, cameras and stop signs is no easy feat, but Josh works diligently to keep everything moving smoothly for our citizens. He is proactive and a keen problem solver, always looking for ways to improve our efficiencies with new systems and technologies. Working in traffic operations is often a behind-the-scenes role, but Josh’s hard work does not go unnoticed. We’re thankful for all he does and are honored to celebrate him as the Employee of the Month.”
