Pensacola, Fla. - Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies is honored to
announce that Escambia County Community Emergency Response Team member,
Sam Mathews, was awarded the CERT Volunteer of the Year at the 2023 Florida CERT
Conference in Orlando, Fla. The Florida CERT Volunteer of the Year award honors an
instructor, team leader, or general volunteer for outstanding contributions to their CERT
program and community. Sam joined Escambia County CERT in 2018 and serves Escambia
County on the CERT team as a member, instructor, leader and Escambia CERT council
volunteer. BRACE supervisor Robin Bridges says, “Sam’s passion for helping his
community is strong, and he puts his all into his teaching to ensure that each student
understands and enjoys the free disaster training. Thank you, Sam, for your service back
to Escambia CERT. Without your support, leadership and knowledge, the Escambia CERT
program would not be where we are today.”
Escambia County CERT is a free program that educates volunteers about disaster
preparedness for the hazards that may occur where they live. CERT trains volunteers in
basic disaster response skills in fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The CERT program offers a consistent, nationwide
approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on
during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. If you are
interested in joining Escambia CERT or want free disaster training, please get in touch
with Esther Barnes at Trainingcoord@bereadyalliance.org or call BRACE at 850-739-3983.
