Published Jul 20, 2023

Escambia County's Summer Youth Employment Program participants were recognized by District 3 Commissioner and Chairman Lumon May and Neighborhood and Human Services staff for their hard work this summer during a ceremony Thursday, July 20 at the Brownsville Community Center, located at 3200 W. Desoto St.

The Youth Employment Program gave over 200 youth the opportunity to receive paid work experience in various county departments, including Animal Services, Building Services, Community and Media Relations, County Attorney, Development Services, District 3 County Commissioners Office, Engineering/Traffic, Extension Services, Facilities Management, IT, Library Services, Escambia County Area Transit, Neighborhood and Human Services, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety, Escambia County Public Schools and the Escambia County Tax Collector.

"What an honor to be here today to celebrate over 200 youth who chose to participate in our program," said Commissioner May. "Our program gets bigger each year and it's a testament to the drive young people have. I want to thank our staff who work tirelessly to make this program happen and our community partners for their support in uplifting the youth in our community. The Summer Youth Employment Program shows that Escambia County is committed to investing in human capital and future generations."

Through the program, youth worked up to 30 hours a week, gaining valuable experience all summer while learning workforce etiquette such as professional dress, timeliness and respect. Youth Employment Program participants also received job readiness training and post-employment briefings, which provided them feedback about their job performance.
