Escambia County Emergency Management is pleased to welcome Scott McKenzie as their newest Emergency Coordinator.
McKenzie joins Emergency Management following active duty with the U.S. Army, serving as a Reconnaissance Officer and an Intelligence Officer, respectively, serving combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, McKenzie worked as a security supervisor and emergency planner for the luxury resort, Andaz Maui, a vetting analyst for the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration, and as a guardian for Escambia County Public Schools.
Born in Virginia to a military family, McKenzie, like any military child, spent much of his youth traveling, eventually settling in Pensacola at Corry Station. After receiving his bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of West Florida, McKenzie earned a master's degree in Intelligence Studies from American Military University. Currently, he's working to finish his Ph.D. in Theology from Liberty University.
"Emergency Management has made changes to our staff structure to ensure that all our EM staff is cross-trained to perform any duty assignment that an Emergency Manager would need to address," said Emergency Manager Travis Tompkins. "Our planning coordinator position was changed to an Emergency Management Coordinator to reflect this. Scott McKenzie is our newest Emergency Management Coordinator who will be working with plans and procedures, along with a host of other emergency management duties. Scott has had a varied career that brings military and homeland security experience to the team. In his own words, he describes himself as a protector, which fits into the mantra of service to our citizens that our EM team puts as a primary focus. I am confident that Scott has a servant’s heart and will be an asset to our citizens."
When not working towards his Ph.D. or serving as Escambia County's newest emergency coordinator, McKenzie enjoys surfing, shooting and homesteading.
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve with Emergency Management, Public Safety, and our partners to promote community preparedness and resiliency against all digital age threats, whether natural or man-made," said McKenzie.
