Work to Begin on Former Omni-Vest Landfill Aug. 29

Published Aug 22, 2022

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will soon begin remediation of the former Omni-Vest Landfill, located at 4094 Idlewood Drive. The project will begin Aug. 29, 2022, with work taking place Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Work is expected to be completed by January 2023.

The Omni-Vest Landfill operated in Escambia County from 1972-1977. Prior to its closure, the landfill accepted wood chips and wash sand from nearby facilities. Based on environmental studies conducted by DEP, a remedial action plan was prepared on how to safely and permanently close the landfill to protect public health and the environment. The plan calls for closure by removal of trees; grading and stabilizing the property; placing a 2-foot-thick soil and topsoil cover on the entire footprint of the landfill; construction of surface water control features; and monitoring of groundwater and subsurface vapor that may occur within the former landfill footprint.

DEP’s objective is to properly close and stabilize the former landfill area. DEP will continue to maintain and monitor the site until closure criteria has been met. Long-term land use controls will be in place to ensure the remedy remains protective and appropriate site reuse is maintained. DEP will perform periodic audits of these controls. Arcadis U.S. Inc. will provide consulting, engineering and construction management for the closure project. DEP will provide regulatory oversight.

Worker and citizen safety are the top priority during all work activities. Several control measures will be in place, including monitoring and control of dust and odors, and monitoring of air quality around the perimeter of the work areas. All project vehicles and trucks will stay on a designated route to help reduce traffic disruption. Signage and traffic controls will be used at the intersection of Ehrmann Street at West Navy Boulevard to maintain safe conditions. Some noise may be heard in the work areas.
