Escambia County is proud to announce a $10,450 award from the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program's Community Grant program in support of a Perdido Key Coastal Demonstration Garden.
The demonstration garden will be located at the Perdido Key Community Center at 15500 Perdido Key Drive. The center currently houses the Perdido Key Visitor Center and the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce. It is also adjacent to Escambia County Fire Rescue Station 19.
Native landscaping is required for properties seeking coverage under the Perdido Key Habitat Conservation Plan. The approved plant list is designed to maintain and improve habitat conditions for coastal wildlife, including the critically endangered Perdido Key Beach Mouse. The demonstration garden will not only showcase approved plant species, but various landscaping techniques specific to the coastal environment as well. Signage will inform visitors about the plants species and techniques used for each area, and the project includes development of a landscaping brochure to be distributed to area homeowners and property managers.
“Coastal landscaping requires a different approach," says Natural Resources Management Community Outreach Specialist Samantha Bolduc. “We want to give people tangible examples they can reference and use in their own yards and gardens.”
The project will be done in partnership with the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce. Chamber staff and partners are currently working to turn an underutilized green space on site into a small park with amenities for pedestrians and cyclists traveling along the future Perdido Key Multi Use Path. An EnergiPlant solar windmill was installed onsite in summer 2021 in support of this project. The future “Preservation Park” will feature ADA-accessible benches and tables, a water bottle refill station, a bike repair station and educational signage about threatened and endangered species in the area.
The project will get underway in the coming months, with planting to occur in spring 2022. Escambia County staff thank the grant selection committee for their consideration and the estuary program staff who worked to make the grant program possible.
