At the April 8 regular board meeting, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the
purchase of new radio equipment for the Public Safety/EMS Division in the amount of $64,991.07.
Escambia County EMS plans to replace the Motorola XTS 2500 portable radios with the new Motorola APEX 8000 for all EMS communications within the next four years. Nine radios would be utilized by EMS leadership, and would allow for interagency communications in the event of a large-scale incident or mutual aid. Additionally, it would allow EMS to integrate with regional partners to ensure the best and most effective communication. These radios are essential equipment and the purchase is in line with equipment replacement and sustainment objectives.
"The implementation of this new life-saving equipment will help the Escambia County Public Safety Department continue to provide a high level of emergency services to the citizens of Escambia County," said Interim Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. "This new radio equipment will greatly improve EMS communications and positively impact the quality of life for residents."
