Escambia County Fire Rescue will be distributing free smoke detectors Saturday, Feb. 11 at 8 a.m. during a neighborhood canvas in the Lakewood area. During the event, ECFR firefighters will be walking the neighborhood, knocking on doors and offering to install a smoke detector. The canvas will cover the general area north of Barrancas Avenue, east of Old Corry Field Road and south of Bayou Chico.
Escambia County Fire Rescue visited the area in December 2016 and set a record for the number of smoke detectors installed by county fire crews in one day, with 100 smoke detectors installed in 71 homes. The program was so well-received by residents that crews ran out of smoke detectors before canvassing the entire neighborhood, so ECFR would like to offer installation of smoke detectors to the remaining Lakewood area residents.
Smoke detectors that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a working smoke detector cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners and Escambia County Fire Rescue are continuing to work toward their goal of having a working smoke detector in every home in the county.
