Despite heavy damage to Escambia County's Ashton Brosnaham Athletic Park from this week's severe weather, the park will reopen Friday, Jan. 6 to host a national flag football championship. The fields are ready to welcome the 2017 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Flag Football Championship Jan. 6-8, the only collegiate national tournament of its kind.
Early Sunday morning, strong winds caused major damage to the complex's grounds and facilities, blowing off the concession stand and ticket office roof, blowing over fences, flooding fields and blowing the scoreboard from its frame. Through coordination with the University of West Florida Recreation Department and the Escambia County Parks and Recreation Department, staff and volunteers have been working to clean the park, and the event will go on as planned.
This is the fourth year Pensacola Sports and the UWF Recreation Department will host this event, which is scheduled to return through 2019. Currently, 70 teams are registered to participate, comprised of over 900 students representing schools from all over the country. Teams qualified for the national championship by winning their regional tournament, and there is also an open bracket allowing for any team to register and compete.
Admission is free for anyone interested in watching. Ashton Brosnaham Park is located at 10370 Ashton Brosnaham Road. For more information about the park, click here.
