Escambia County and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection have partnered to remove an estimated 20,000 waste tires from B&S Tires located on Lillian Highway. The removal is part of an effort to eliminate mosquito breeding areas to help protect Escambia County residents and visitors.
An initial inspection of the facility in February by Escambia County Environmental Code Enforcement found violations including nuisance conditions, trash and debris, and overgrowth. The site was also out of compliance with its DEP permit, which authorized a maximum of 5,500 tires to be stored at the site.
After B&S Tires surrendered its permit, DEP and Escambia County entered into an agreement authorizing the county to remove and properly dispose of the tires, and then seek reimbursement of costs through the department using the facility’s financial assurance mechanism and a portion of the $750,000 appropriated to the DEP for disposal of waste tires. Pursuant to the statute, the department will seek to recover the funds from the site owner or person responsible for the accumulation, unless they decide the amount involved is too small, or recovery is very unlikely.
“DEP is partnering with local governments across Florida to help clean up areas where waste tires have been illegally dumped, and increase awareness about the proper disposal of used tires,” said Shawn Hamilton, director of DEP’s Northwest District Office. “Through strong community partnerships, we can better protect our residents and visitors, and our natural resources.”
The work at the B&S Tire site is currently underway and is expected to be complete by mid-December.
