Carpenter Creek Headwaters- Water Quality Improvements and Park Amenities

This project is located at the headwaters of Carpenter Creek off Olive Road between Winodee Road and Cody Lane at 725 E. Olive Rd.  It consists of two separately funded parts: a water quality improvements and park amenities.

Water quality improvements include the design and construction of two stormwater ponds with a hydrodynamic separator to treat stormwater that flows off Olive Road into Carpenter Creek, then into Bayou Texar and Pensacola Bay.  Stormwater pond construction will also alleviate flooding from a historic flood zone near Whitmire Drive and Sabra Drive when connected to Olive Road drainage improvements.  The project restored 7.5 acres of wetland habitat by treating and removing invasive plant species and establishing and maintaining native and habitat-appropriate plants.  Contractors removed approximately 10,000 cubic yards (about 600 dump trucks) of soil containing invasive Cogon grass and/or debris like tires and scrap metal that could leach chemicals and contaminate the creek. Newly planted trees include:

  • 56 Live oak
  • 56 Bald Cypress
  • 52 Magnolia
  • 25 Wax Myrtle
  • 5 Eastern Red Cedar

The public park has a small parking lot and features concrete walking paths, two boardwalks over the creek, a short nature trail, educational signs, picnic tables and benches, bicycle racks, and a pollinator garden.  Native flowers like black‑eyed Susan and false rosemary were planted to establish a haven for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.  The concrete paths, picnic table, and boardwalks including the overlook of the creek are ADA-accessible. The total length of the boardwalks, trail, and concrete paths is approximately half a mile.

This project was funded by two FDEP grants from the Florida Trustee Implementation Group (FL TIG) through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Deepwater Horizon settlement, and by Escambia County Local Option Sales Taxes (L.O.S.T.).
