Sunset Island Restoration & Beneficial Reuse Area

Escambia County is advancing plans for a beneficial use site that will support the placement of sand dredged from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) while creating lasting environmental and community benefits. The proposed project site is located north of Perdido Key, approximately one mile west of the Theo Baars Bridge near Galvez Landing.

In addition to providing a location for future dredged material, the project is intended to enhance coastal fish and wildlife habitat and create new recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. By beneficially reusing dredged material, the County aims to support shoreline resilience, improve habitat value, and expand public access to the area.

On March 25, 2025, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners awarded a contract for engineering services to Moffatt & Nichol, Inc. Current funding will support development of 30% design plans and preparation of the required permit applications. County staff are actively pursuing additional funding needed to complete final design and secure all necessary state and federal permits.

Escambia County is coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on project development and anticipates partnering with the Corps during future construction. The timing of construction will depend largely on the Corps’ dredging schedule and available funding.

To help move the project forward, County staff have submitted the project for consideration through multiple grant funding opportunities. Securing additional funding will be critical to completing final design, obtaining the necessary permits, and preparing the project for future construction. The County expects to receive a funding decision on the next grant opportunity in fall 2026.
