Sunset Island Restoration & Beneficial Reuse Area

Escambia County is developing plans for a beneficial reuse site to accommodate future sand dredged from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The proposed project site is located north of Perdido Key, approximately one mile west of the Theo Baars Bridge near Galvez Landing. The project also aims to enhance existing coastal fish and wildlife habitats while creating new recreational opportunities for the community. On March 25, 2025, the Board awarded a contract for engineer services to Moffatt & Nichol, Inc. Current funding will support development of 30% design plans and preparation of the required permit applications. County staff are actively pursuing additional funding to complete final design work and secure all necessary state and federal permits. Escambia County will partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on both design development and eventual construction of the project. The timeline for construction will largely depend on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dredge schedule and budget.
