Motley Court Gulley Improvements

This project was derived from excessive storm events of unusual intensity from June 1, 2017 through June 20, 2017 culminating with Tropical Storm Cindy, as well as feeder band rain events from Hurricane Harvey on August 30, 2017 through September 2, 2017 that have resulted in erosion of an existing drainage way, identified as Motley Court Clear Creek Gulley.

This drainage way is located within a 30’ unopened right-of-way starting at the North end of Motley Court, along the East boundary of Boulder Creek 1st Addition subdivision, and extending approximately 1700 linear feet to Clear Creek.  This open ditch had eroded into a meandering gulley, ranging in varying widths of 10’-40’ wide, depths of 3’ to 20’ deep, and extending into the University of West Florida Property.  Had this gulley been left unattended, damage to waterline utilities located in the unopened right-of-way, damage to private properties and home improvements, and continued degradation of eroded sediment in Clear Creek was eminent.

To mitigate further erosion in this area, Escambia County proposed a conceptual design to include utilization of the two primary areas of the significant erosion as sediment basins to balance earthwork and reduce peak discharge. The remaining portion of the gulley was reshaped with an open ditch atop a pipe drop inlet between basins. Such improvements incorporated into the project provide an added benefit of erosion reduction of Clear Creek adjacent properties to the Northeast, as well as flood protection.
