This project is located at the headwaters of Carpenter Creek off Olive Road between Winodee Road and Cody Lane. It consists of two, separately funded parts: a water quality improvements portion and a park amenities portion.
Water quality improvements include the design and construction of a retention pond and hydrodynamic separator to treat stormwater that flows off Olive Road into Carpenter Creek, then into Bayou Texar and Pensacola Bay. Stormwater pond construction will also alleviate flooding from a historic flood zone near Whitmire Drive and Sabra Drive. Restoration of 2.6 acres of wetland habitat will be accomplished by treating and monitoring invasive plant species and by establishing and maintaining plant species that are native and habitat-appropriate.
The public park will provide enhanced recreational opportunities through amenities such as a walking trail, a boardwalk over the creek, a parking lot, picnic tables, and a pollinator garden.
This project is funded by two FDEP grants from the Florida Trustee Implementation Group (FL TIG) through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Deepwater Horizon settlement, and by Escambia County Local Option Sales Taxes (LOST).
