Escambia County Recognizes National Correctional Professionals Week

Published May 4, 2026

Escambia County invites residents to join in recognizing National Correctional Professionals Week, which is observed each year during the first full week in May to celebrate the dedication and hard work of the men and women who serve in the corrections profession.

Escambia County Corrections is a dedicated team of professionals devoted to serving the public by maintaining a balanced, safe, and secure correctional system of institutional and community corrections programs. Collectively, Corrections staff provide a healthy environment for criminal offenders to maximize opportunities through accountability for actions, treatment, education, and positive reinforcement within a safe, secure, and fair Corrections Department. The department includes the following divisions: Jail Division, Community Corrections Division, and Work Annex Division.

“I am incredibly proud to dedicate this week to the honorable men and women of Escambia County Corrections and everything they do for public safety,” Escambia County Corrections Director Chief Rich Powell said. “They are a vital cog in the criminal justice system, showing unwavering dedication, integrity, professionalism no matter what challenges they face. Our team works diligently to create opportunities to help build a safer community. Their service does not go unseen or unappreciated. To our corrections officers, medical professionals, and all staff at the Escambia County Jail, thank you for all you do for Escambia County.”

National Correctional Professionals Week was originally established by President Ronald Reagan on May 5, 1984. His proclamation acknowledged that while these professionals are an essential part of the criminal justice system, their work frequently goes unnoticed by the public. Reagan praised correctional officers for their “courage, dedication, and professionalism,” emphasizing the importance of honoring their service to the nation.
