The bill that includes the $3 million funding for the South Navy Boulevard Corridor Management Plan has been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and it is now heading to the President’s desk for final passage.
“This funding will be instrumental in moving forward with these much-needed improvements to South Navy Boulevard, which is a vital gateway to NAS Pensacola,” District 2 Commissioner Mike Kohler said. “I’m excited to not only make aesthetic improvements that we can all be proud of as a community, but also to enhance base security through improvements to the NAS Pensacola main gate. Thank you to everyone involved in securing funding for this incredibly important project for District 2, our military community, and all of Escambia County.”
Escambia County is working with the Florida Department of Transportation, Naval Air Station Pensacola, and other community stakeholders on this project, which focuses on a one-mile corridor of South Navy Boulevard from Barrancas Avenue to the Sam A. Lovelace Bridge. The total project cost is approximately $13 million.
The plan includes aesthetic improvements such as access management with landscaped medians, traffic calming features, innovative stormwater management solutions, landscaping, enhanced lighting, new wayfinding and informational signage, sidewalks, and a multi-use path. It also aims to beautify the area by creating a new landscaped stormwater management park at the south end of the corridor.
