Gulf Coast Youth Mountain Bike Association Shines in Cycling Race Hosted in Escambia County

The Gulf Coast Youth Mountain Bike Association delivered an outstanding performance at the opening race of the Alabama Cycling Association series, held at the University of West Florida Bike Trails in Pensacola, located in Escambia County District 5. This highly anticipated event brought together athletes from across the state of Alabama and the Gulf Coast region, showcasing some of the best young mountain bikers in the area.

Notable Individual Performances:

  • Zoie Bowyer (Spanish Fort) – 2nd place, 7th-grade girls
  • Wyatt Richerson (Spanish Fort) – 2nd place, 7th-grade Boys
  • Sofia Franklin (Aggie Mountain Bike Team) – 1st place, 8th-grade Girls
  • Blakely McCabe (Aggie Mountain Bike Team) – 4th place, 8th-grade Girls
  • Braden Ruiz (Aggie Mountain Bike Team) – 3rd place, Freshman Boys
  • Hunter Grant (Dirt Shark Mountain Bike Team) – 2nd place, JV2 Girls
  • Nick Kontek (Aggie Mountain Bike Team) – 4th place, JV1 Boys
  • Tres Strother (Aggie Mountain Bike Team) – 1st place, Varsity Boys

Adding to the team’s success, the Aggie Mountain Bike Team earned 1st place in Division 2, highlighting the depth and talent of their riders.

"I'd like to congratulate all of the talented young athletes and teams who participated in this exciting event, particularly the Aggie Mountain Bike Team for their first-place win," District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry said. "We appreciate the Alabama Cycling Association for choosing to host their race in Florida for the first time ever, and we were especially proud to host it in Escambia County District 5. Thank you to the Gulf Coast Youth Mountain Bike Association for their partnership, along with Florida Power and Light and the University of West Florida for providing their property to make this fantastic event possible in our community."

The GCYMBA extends its gratitude to District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry, along with the Escambia County Road Department and Parks and Recreation Department for their efforts in preparing the course and spectator areas. Their work enhanced safety for both participants and attendees, ensuring a smooth and successful event. As a first-time race venue, the University of West Florida Bike Trails welcomed hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators, generating a significant economic impact for Escambia County.

With athletes from across Alabama and the Gulf Coast competing, this race served as a thrilling kickoff to the Alabama Cycling Association series. The competition continues with upcoming races throughout the season, and GCYMBA riders are eager to build on their strong start.
