Escambia County is pleased to recognize Scottlin Williams, Emergency Coordinator and Meteorologist in the Emergency Management Division of the Department of Public Safety, as the August 2024 Employee of the Month.
Williams' career began with Escambia County on July 25, 2022. As an Emergency Coordinator, Williams enables the community to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters through the development and presentation of public outreach campaigns, facilitation of Emergency Operation Center training, management of WebEOC and Everbridge Emergency Alert notifications, and serving as a liaison for Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies and the Escambia County Long Term Recovery Group.
As Escambia County's meteorologist, Williams provides meteorological support for the county, particularly through her accurate and thorough weather predictions for planning large-scale, countywide events. One of Williams' notable moments as a meteorologist occurred during the 2023 Pensacola Beach Air Show when she and her team made the appropriate decision to end the show early due to inclement weather.
In addition, Williams prepares and submits Escambia County's Disaster Readiness Assessment for the Florida Recovery Obligation Calculation program, which standardizes, streamlines, and simplifies the Public Assistance process resulting in a quicker recovery and reduced risk for Escambia County.
"I am extremely grateful and honored to be recognized as Escambia County's employee of the month," said Williams. "I am fortunate to work alongside such an outstanding team. The constant support from my supervisors and co-workers within Emergency Management and Public Safety makes it easy to work hard and excel. I deeply value this acknowledgment. To be appreciated encourages and motivates me to continue striving for excellence."
Recently, Williams brought the HERricane program to Escambia County, which empowers women, increases diversity and female leadership in the emergency management profession and allied fields, and improves outreach and engagement around emergency preparedness. As HERricane Escambia's Program Manager, she oversees the Advisory Board, curriculum creation and event coordination for the four-day camp. Williams and her team also raised over $12,000 in in-kind and monetary donations for the inaugural camp.
Williams is heavily involved in Emergency Management's growing social media presence, starring in ECEM's weekly video segment, "A Minute with EM," and consistently shares the latest weather updates in the tropics in an effort to extend ECEM's messaging to as many residents and visitors as possible.
“It is with great pleasure to have nominated Scottlin as the August 2024 Employee of the Month," said Emergency Manager Travis Tompkins. "Scottlin offers a unique perspective as a meteorologist, which greatly contributes to the hurricane preparedness messaging for our residents and visitors. Since Scottlin joined ECEM, she has worked diligently with our county departments and community partners to spread the message of hurricane preparation, and, using her experience as a broadcast meteorologist, has presented at several speaking engagements on behalf of the county to discuss her outlook into each hurricane season. With Scottlin’s leadership and vision, HERricane Escambia was a tremendous success, and I’m excited to see this program grow to be one of Escambia County’s premier summer camps.”
During Williams' employee of the month proclamation at the Board of County Commissioners meeting Thursday, Aug. 1, she took time to share the latest update on Invest 97L with the county commissioners and those in attendance, displaying her commitment and expertise as a meteorologist, even during moments of personal recognition.
“Scottlin’s contributions to Emergency Management extend far beyond her coordinator role," said Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. "As Escambia County’s meteorologist, she provides accurate, timely forecasts that assist in county-led decisions. Her role as a meteorologist extends beyond Public Safety, as she has assisted the Parks and Recreation department when they are hosting significant outdoor events with daily weather updates. Her natural leadership abilities are unquestionable, proven by the success of HERricane Escambia. Congratulations to Scottlin on her well-earned recognition.”
While not at work, Scottlin spends much of her free time planning her upcoming wedding in November. She also enjoys spending time with her golden doodle, Piper, cooking, spending time with family, and supporting Mississippi State and University of Alabama athletics.
