Escambia County and District 3 Commissioner Lumon May have partnered with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to host the annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 19, featuring a night of baseball, fireworks and fun activities for the whole family to commemorate Juneteenth.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. before the Blue Wahoos vs. Chattanooga Lookouts game scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Blue Wahoos Stadium, 351 W. Cedar St. in Pensacola. The first 1,000 fans to visit the community tent outside of the stadium will receive a free ticket to the game, along with a free hat and a concession voucher.
The community is invited to join in celebrating Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as Juneteenth, now officially a federal holiday. Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, gather, reflect on the past and look to the future.
The Juneteenth Celebration will feature educational opportunities, live music, vendors, and a fireworks show after the game.
“I’m very excited to bring the community together to commemorate Juneteenth, which is such an important part of our shared history,” Commissioner May said. “I encourage everyone to join us to celebrate and reflect on Juneteenth, while enjoying a fun night of baseball and activities with the whole family.”
Along with Escambia County, Commissioner May and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, additional Juneteenth Celebration event partners include the City of Pensacola and the Escambia-Pensacola Human Relations Commission.
