Kolby Sprague Receives June 2024 Employee of the Month

Published Jun 7, 2024

Escambia County is pleased to recognize Kolby Sprague, Environmental Technician in the Natural Resources Conservation Division of the Natural Resources Management Department, as the June 2024 Employee of the Month. Sprague’s selection was recognized at the June 6 Board of County Commissioners Meeting.

Sprague’s career with Escambia County began on May 2, 2022. As Environmental Technician, he is responsible for helping citizens address land management concerns such as soil erosion and drainage issues. He plays an active role in land management activities on county property, including forest, recreational and wildlife management. He works closely with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service to conserve land, water, and other natural resources, and implement cost-share programs for local farmers and timber landowners.

“I am immensely grateful to be the recipient of this month’s Escambia County Employee of the Month,” Sprague said. “It’s been a joy to work here these past years, and I’m excited for what the future holds. Thank you to all involved with this process and to everyone within the Natural Resources Conservation Division. Nothing is possible without all of their support.”

In addition, Sprague oversees the Natural Resources Conservation Division’s Invasive Plant Species Eradication Program, identifying invasive plant species on county property and determining the best course of action to treat them. He is a Florida Certified Herbicide Applicator and has treated numerous acres of invasive plant species. Sprague’s diligent efforts and collaboration with the Escambia County Parks and Recreation Department have led to a reduction in cogon grass, an aggressive and invasive perennial grass. Sprague also leads the Wood Duck Restoration Project at Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve, partnering with the Northview High School FFA chapter to provide nesting habitat for wood ducks to increase their population in the preserve.

“Kolby is an invaluable member of our team and an asset to the citizens of Escambia County,” Natural Resources Management Department Director Chips Kirschenfeld said. “His strong grant writing skills helped the department obtain an urban forestry grant to create a tree arboretum at the Byrneville Community Park, providing additional educational opportunities for the public. Kolby has built strong relationships with other county departments and the agricultural community, and always seeks new opportunities to build on the county’s conservation efforts. We are honored to see his hard work recognized.”

Outside his work duties, Sprague is active in the county’s sports programs. A former collegiate baseball player, he regularly participates in the Pensacola Men’s Baseball League at Bellview Athletic Park. He is also an active kayaker and golfer.
