Animal Welfare Deploys for Hurricane Idalia Recovery

Published Sep 6, 2023

Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare's Disaster Response Team and members of the ASPCA deployed Saturday, Sept. 2, to Taylor County, Fla., to assist with Hurricane Idalia recovery. While there, they will work alongside the Taylor County animal shelter and disaster response teams to assist animals and pet owners impacted by Hurricane Idalia.

Animal Welfare staff recently received specialized animal search and rescue training as part of a joint effort with the Escambia County Fire Rescue Special Operations Team, covering special skills needed to assist animals and the public following a disaster. Funded by a $50,000 grant from the ASPCA's Disaster Response Grant, the joint ASAR training covered large animal rescues and water rescues involving animals and humans. Read more about the ASAR training here.

"The grant from the ASPCA allowed us to form the county's Disaster Response Team earlier this year," said Animal Welfare Director John Robinson. "The ASAR training staff received will be incredibly beneficial to Hurricane Idalia recovery efforts and future disaster responses. The Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare remains ready to assist our partner counties that have been impacted by hurricanes and other disasters. I'm proud of our team for stepping up during this time."

Animal Welfare's Disaster Response Team are the second Escambia County team to deploy to counties impacted by Hurricane Idalia. Members of the Escambia County Fire Rescue Light Technical Rescue Team deployed Wednesday, Aug. 30, to Madison, Fla. to assist with rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia.
