July Events at West Florida Public Libraries

Beanstack: Summer 2022: Sail the Seven Seas on an Ocean of Possibilities

Tuesday, May 31-Sunday, July 31, mywfpl.beanstack.org

The Summer Reading and Summer STEAM challenge of 2022 is all about oceanography. Set sail across the seven seas on an ocean of possibilities! Complete groups of reading activities to earn prizes and digital raffle tickets. Attend community programs and STEAM events to earn additional raffle tickets. Apply your raffle tickets for a chance to win a system-wide grand-prize in your age group. Log all reading activities, program attendance, and digital raffle tickets in Beanstack by midnight on July 31 to be eligible for the grand-prize drawings! A paper copy of the challenge will be available. Preregistration for the challenge will begin on Monday, May 16.

Join representatives from the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Estuary Program (PPBEP) for a series of special story times and programs about the wildlife in our local watershed. PPBEP’s mission is to restore and protect the Pensacola and Perdido Bay watersheds through restoration, community education, and unbiased monitoring of the health of our bays and estuaries. All ages are welcome.

Join representatives from the National Naval Aviation Museum to learn about the intersection of military operations, flight, and oceanography, the science of the sea. The mission of the National Naval Aviation Museum centers on the preservation and sharing of aviation history. The Museum is located on NAS Pensacola. All ages are welcome. The presentation at Genealogy Library will focus on family history research and is suggested for an adult audience.

Florida State Park Rangers at Family Story Time

Swing by your local library to view a tour of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center and its exhibits. Learn about sea turtles, their local habitats in the Florida Panhandle, and how to protect both.  The mission of the NBSTCC is to give “sea turtles more tomorrows through conservation, education, and research." All ages are welcome.

Environmental Protection Agency at Your Library

Join representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to learn more about how you can help protect our local oceans and waterways. An interactive activity will be available for youth and their families. All ages are welcome.

Beanstack: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There is more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

Virtual: Bermuda Triangle Escape Room

Virtual: Under the Sea Trivia

Go on a virtual deep-dive into the Great Barrier Reef! Learn about the largest reef in the world and all its marine inhabitants. Take-home Craft Kits

Take-away craft kits and other activity bags are available at the Youth Services desk. Availability is on a first-come-first-serve basis during open hours. Kits rotate regularly. Available during open hours.

Mindful Journal 

Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life. Available during open hours.

Creative Writing Journal

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem. Available during open hours.

Oil Spill Cleanup with STEAM

Ocean life is beautiful, but oil spills can pose a threat to these awesome ecosystems! Join STEAM in learning how you can prevent oil spills and practice with a cleanup!

Council on Aging

Tuesday, July 5, 10:30-11:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Council on Aging of West Florida presents a thoughtful presentation on social services and opportunities available to elder adults in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. With a charge from the State of Florida to keep seniors at home, with independence and dignity for as long as possible, Council on Aging works to provide comfort and care in home, eliminating the need for long-term nursing home placement and expensive personal care. If you are aging and need help, or are a caregiver for an aging older adult, we want you to receive every service available.

Legal Services of North Florida

Tuesday, July 5, 10:30-11:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is one of seven legal service organizations in Florida. Our program, in the 16 counties of North Florida, works hard to meet the legal needs of children, elderly, victims of abuse, and those with disabilities. LSNF’s priority areas of representation include support for families; preserving the home; maintaining economic stability; safety, stability and health; and serving populations with special vulnerabilities. These translate to cases involving Family Law, Housing, Public Benefits, Employment, Education, and Health Care issues. LSNF’s purpose is to provide case representation and advice to low-income persons in civil matters only. LSNF serves only the low-income and those with certain vulnerable circumstances including the elderly. LSNF never charges a fee for our services to a client. More information about this organization is available at lsnf.org.

Popular Literary Book Club Discussion: Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner

Join the Popular Literary Book Club as we discuss Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner, a memoir from the author of the 2018 New Yorker viral essay “Crying in H-Mart” and an indie rock star. Michelle Zauner writes about her life growing up Korean-American, losing her mother, and finding her own identity.

Hunter Safety Class

Get ready for the fall hunting season. Hunters need this class to get their hunting license.  This class requires completion of the Florida's free online hunter safety course BEFORE attending class. Tabletop Gaming: Roleplaying for Kids

Join us for a family-friendly roleplaying adventure! We’ve all played “Let’s Pretend” or “Make Believe” at some point. All a roleplaying game does is stick a few rules on top of that so everyone can get on with enjoying the story they’re making together. Recommended for children age 5 to 12.

We will help you learn how to play one of the oldest games in the world. Whether you are a brand-new beginner or a master chess player, this is a chance to learn new skills, practice your moves and improve your game in a friendly environment. All playing levels are welcome, including beginners. The library will provide all the chessboards and pieces.

Chair Yoga

You don’t have to go to a gym to improve your flexibility. You don’t even have to leave your chair! Join us for an hour of stretching and breathing exercises that can be performed while seated.

Ham Radio Explorers

Join us as members of the Five Flags Amateur Radio Association come to show us the wonders of ham radio! We will be learning how a ham radio works and even get the chance to talk with ham operators located at another library branch. Come join the fun!

Adulting 101

Join us for a five-month series of Adulting 101 classes. Classes will be hosted the fourth Thursday of every month from June until October 2022. We will cover topics such as financial literacy and budgeting, college and career planning, and health care basics. Suggested for teens and young adults.
