January Events at West Florida Public Libraries

Beanstack: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Continuous - Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There is more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

Winter “Season’s Readings” Challenge: Beanstack

Monday, Nov. 15 - Saturday, Jan. 8 – Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org

Join West Florida Public Libraries for our Winter Reading Challenge! This year’s theme is “Season’s Readings.” This challenge is open to all ages and kids, teens, and adults are encouraged to participate. Complete our seasonally themed reading activities to collect virtual puzzle pieces. Collect all four of the puzzle pieces to complete the seasonal puzzles. For each puzzle you complete, you win a prize. Complete all four seasonal puzzles and win a completion prize. Once you have completed the four seasonally themed reading activities and received the season’s badge, you are eligible to visit the library and collect your prize. Completing each season’s puzzle also means you win raffle tickets that can be entered for a chance to win even more cool prizes. Register at mywfpl.beanstack.org or stop by your local library and pick up a paper copy of the challenge.

Take-home Craft Kits

Take-away craft kits and other activity bags are available at the Youth Services desk. Availability is on a first-come-first-serve basis during open hours. Kits rotate regularly. Not available Jan. 1 or Jan. 17 due to holiday closures.

Mindful Journal

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life. Not available Jan. 1 or Jan. 17 due to holiday closures.

Creative Writing Journal

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem. Not available Jan. 1 or Jan. 17 due to holiday closures.

Council on Aging

Tuesday, Jan. 4, 10: 30 - 11:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Council on Aging of West Florida presents a thoughtful presentation on social services and opportunities available to elder adults in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. With a charge from the State of Florida to keep seniors at home, with independence and dignity for as long as possible, Council on Aging works to provide comfort and care in home, eliminating the need for long-term nursing home placement and expensive personal care. If you are aging and need help, or are a caregiver for an aging older adult, we want you to receive every service available. More information about this organization is available at coawfla.org.

Legal Services of North Florida

Tuesday, Jan. 4, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is one of seven legal services organizations in Florida. Our program in the 16 counties in the North Florida works hard to meet the legal needs of children, elderly, victims of abuse and those with disabilities. LSNF’s priority areas of representation include support for families; preserving the home; maintaining economic stability; safety, stability and health; and serving populations with special vulnerabilities. These translate to cases involving family law, housing, public benefits, employment, education and health care issues. LSNF’s purpose is to provide case representation and advice to low-income persons in civil matters only. LSNF serves only the low-income and those with certain vulnerable circumstances including the elderly. LSNF never charges a fee for our services to a client. Jazz by the Book: Hosted by Joe Occhipinti

Crafternoons: Rag Wreathes

Join us at Pensacola Library for a creative adventure! Crafternoons are held the first Thursday of each month. Each month we experiment with a new medium, explore a new theme, learn a new hobby or construct on old favorite. Whether we are painting, crocheting, constructing faux stained glass or fashioning unicorn dream catchers, all ages are welcome. January’s project will be DIY rag wreathes. All materials are provided.

Computing Basics: How Do I Turn This Thing On!

Join us as we demystify the use of computers, the Internet and more. Feel free to bring your portable personal devices for a question and answer session at the end of the class. Computers will be provided for the class.

Learn how to play one of the oldest games in the world. Whether you are a beginner or a master chess player, this is a chance to learn new skills, practice your moves and improve your game in a friendly environment. The library will provide all the chessboards and pieces. Every skill level is welcome.

Tools Day

Tuesday, Jan. 11, 4 - 5 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Learn to operate some basic tools while creating a take home project! This is a fun and interactive activity with a STEAM member to build a child’s confidence and motor skills within the toolbox. Suggested for children ages of four to 11 years old. All materials are provided.

Want to play your favorite game with community friends? Bring your Nintendo Switch and swing by the Pensacola Library the second Thursday of the month. Need resources? Our staff will meet you on our Library Island. A limited number of Switches will be available for use for those who do not have one of their own or who might want to experience something new!

LAN Party at the Library

Friday, Jan. 14, 4 - 5 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Join us as we game “old school” at Pensacola Library! Bring your friends to play and make some new ones when you visit for our Local Area Network (LAN) party. STEAM will be hosting a number of popular games where you can team up. See you there!

Celebrating Florida’s Arbor Day at Pensacola Library

Saturday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

West Florida Public Libraries is collaborating with the Escambia County Extension Service to celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day with a free tree sapling giveaway at three library locations: Pensacola Library, Tryon Library and Southwest Library. Tree giveaway will begin at 10 a.m. and be available while supplies last. Community members are welcome to pick up a Build a Bee House activity kit for the family throughout the day at Pensacola Library. Kits are available while supplies last. A family movie showing will accompany the tree giveaway.

Acrylic Paint Pour

Tuesday, Jan. 18, 3 - 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Join STEAM for a special art project. We will be exploring methods of producing cool art with acrylic paints. All materials are provided.

Popular Literary Book Club Discussion: The Survivors: A Novel by Jane Harper

Join the Popular Literary Book Club as we discuss The Survivors: A Novel by Jane Harper. Jane Harper’s latest involves long-held, tragic secrets of a small-town community brought to life by a lifeless body washed up on the shore.

Adulting 101

Join us for a five-month series of Adulting 101 classes at the Pensacola Library. Classes will be hosted the fourth Thursday of every month from Jan. until May 2022. Every Saturday, we will hide the mystery book somewhere in the children’s collection. The child who finds it gets a trip to the treasure chest! One winner every Saturday.

Celebrating Florida’s Arbor Day at Tryon Library

Saturday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. – Tryon Library

West Florida Public Libraries is collaborating with the Escambia County Extension Service to celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day with a free tree sapling giveaway at three library locations: Pensacola Library, Tryon Library, and Southwest Library. Tree giveaway will begin at 10 a.m. and be available while supplies last. No registration is required. An Arbor Day come-and-go activity will also be available during open hours while supplies last.

LEGO® Club

Monday - Friday, 4 - 5 p.m. – Westside Library

Build, learn and play every day! Join us at Westside Library every Monday – Friday from 4 – 5 p.m. for building with LEGOs! LEGO club is best for children ages five and up. Children under eight years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All LEGOs are provided. Not available Jan. 17 due to holiday closures.

Mystery Book Bundles

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. – Westside Library

Check out a mystery book bundle! Each preschool bag contains three new picture books and youth and young adult bags contain two themed chapter books. All mystery book bundles may be checked out for three weeks. Not available Jan. 17 due to holiday closure.

New Year’s Hat Craft

Wednesday, Jan. 5, 12 - 1 p.m. – Westside Library

Visit Westside Library and celebrate the new year with us by making a New Year’s hat. Suggested for ages 5 and up. All materials will be provided.

Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. at Westside Library

Monday, Jan. 10 - Friday Jan. 14, 12 - 4 p.m. – Westside Library

Visit Westside Library and write what dreams you have for the future. Your “dream cloud” will be displayed in the children’s section until the end of January. This event is in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Celebrating Florida’s Arbor Day at Westside Library: Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Friday, Jan. 14, 12 - 2 p.m. – Westside Library

Stop by Westside Library on Friday, Jan. 14 for an indoor scavenger hunt to celebrate Florida’s Arbor Day.  Embark on an adventure by looking for objects and information in the children’s section. Suggested for ages 5 and up.
