November Events at West Florida Public Libraries

Beanstack: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Monday, Feb. 1 - Continuous - Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There is more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

Virtual Cookbook

Monday, Nov. 1 - Tuesday, Nov. 30 – Virtual

During the month of November, West Florida Public Libraries is asking you to share your favorite family recipes for our virtual cookbook! Submit your recipe using this link: WFPL Virtual Cookbook Submission. All recipes collected will be compiled into a virtual book and released online in December.

Winter “Season’s Readings” Challenge: Beanstack

Monday, Nov. 15 – Saturday, Jan. 8 - Virtual

Join West Florida Public Libraries for our Winter Reading Challenge! This year’s theme is “Season’s Readings”. This challenge is open to all ages and kids, teens and adults are encouraged to participate. Complete our seasonally themed reading activities to collect virtual puzzle pieces. Collect all four of the puzzle pieces to complete the seasonal puzzles. For each puzzle you complete, you win a prize. Complete all four seasonal puzzles and win a completion prize. Once you have completed the four seasonally themed reading activities and received the season’s badge, you are eligible to visit the library and collect your prize. Completing each season’s puzzle also means you win raffle tickets that can be entered for a chance to win even more cool prizes. Register at mywfpl.beanstack.org or stop by your local library and pick up a paper copy of the challenge.

Stay-In Family Movie Night!

Come in and check out one of our Family Movie Night Bundles every Friday and Saturday. Bundles include a family friendly movie, a bag of microwave popcorn and a family friendly activity. Movies may be checked out for seven days and the rest is yours to keep! Not available Nov. 26 due to Thanksgiving holiday library closures.

Mystery Book Bundles

Mystery Book Bundles are available for pick up at the Pensacola Library. All books can be checked out for three weeks. Be surprised by a new read today! Available during open hours.

Take-home Craft Kits

Take-away craft kits and other activity bags are available at the circulation desk. Availability is on a first-come-first-serve basis during open hours. Kits rotate regularly.

Outdoor Musical Busy Board

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library*

Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Stop by the Pensacola Library and let the kids play on our outdoor musical busy board. Check out a pair of flip-flop drumsticks from the Circulation desk and go to town as a family. Unavailable on stormy days.

Mindful Journal

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library*

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life.

Creative Writing Journal

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem.

Tools Day

Children ages of 4 to 11 years old can learn to operate basic tools while creating a take-home project! This is a fun and interactive activity with a STEAM member to build each child’s motor skills and confidence within the toolbox.

Crafternoons: Snow Globes

Thursday, Nov. 4, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Join us at Pensacola Library for a creative adventure! Crafternoons are held the first Thursday of each month. Each month we experiment with a new medium, explore a new theme, learn a new hobby or construct an old favorite. Whether we are painting, crocheting, constructing faux stained glass or fashioning unicorn dream catchers, all ages are welcome. November’s project will be DIY snow globes. All materials are provided by the library.

Soap Making: Make, Use, Repeat

Friday, Nov. 5, 5 – 6:30 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Join us at the Pensacola Library for a demonstration on how to make your own soap by combining simple ingredients to create something for yourself or to give as a gift.

Local Author James Becker’s Thoth’s Riddle: A Journey of the Mind

Saturday, Nov. 6, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Thoth's Riddle: A Journey of the Mind is an illustrated anthology that focuses on science fiction, fantasy adventure and horror. Step right up and see for yourself! Local author Allie Marchase was born in Alabama and graduated from the University of Montevallo in 2010. Ms. Marchase has been writing fantasy for years and is currently working on a fantasy series. Local author James Becker was born in Denton, Texas but now calls Fairhope, Alabama home. Mr. Becker attended the University of Montevallo.  He is also the founder of "Thoth's Riddle Publishing.”  This is the fifth book in their anthology series.

Council on Aging

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 10 – 11 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Council on Aging of West Florida presents a thoughtful presentation on social services and opportunities available to elder adults in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. With a charge from the State of Florida to keep seniors at home, with independence and dignity for as long as possible, Council on Aging works to provide comfort and care in-home, eliminating the need for long-term nursing home placement and expensive personal care. If you are aging and need help, or are a caregiver for an aging older adult, we want you to receive every service available.

Legal Services of North Florida

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is one of seven legal services organizations in Florida. Our program in North Florida's 16 counties works hard to meet the legal needs of children, elderly, victims of abuse and those with disabilities. LSNF’s priority areas of representation include support for families; preserving the home; maintaining economic stability; safety, stability and health; and serving populations with special vulnerabilities. These translate to cases involving family law, housing, public benefits, employment, education and health care issues. LSNF’s purpose is to provide case representation and advice to low-income persons in civil matters only. LSNF serves only the low-income and those with certain vulnerable circumstances including the elderly. LSNF never charges a fee for our services to a client.

Popular Literary Book Club Discussion: The Midnight Library: A Novel by Matt Haig

Join the Popular Literary Book Club as we discuss The Midnight Library, the uplifting literary and sci-fi novel by acclaimed author Matt Haig. We follow Nora as she explores a library at the border between life and death with infinite books detailing infinite lives she might have lived, if only she’d made different choices. Faced with the chance to change her life for a new one, she must search within herself to decide what a truly fulfilling life might be.   

LEGO® Night

Roasts and Rhymes

Friday, Nov. 19, 6 – 8 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Come share your original poetry, short stories and rhymes during this open mic-style event. This is a family-friendly event and West Florida Public Libraries asks that all content be appropriate for all ages. A variety of coffees and infused waters will be available for tasting. A brief intermission will be held to allow attendees to network and mingle with fellow poets and writers. First-time to professional performers are welcome.

Dream Jars

Make and Take Festive Paper Cutouts

Make your own paper doll cutouts for festive holiday decorations. You will use the Silhouette electronic cutting machine to cut paper into different shapes, including turkeys! You can decorate your cutouts any way you would like! All glue, scissors and other materials provided by the library.

Genealogy Scavenger Hunt

BRACE presents Stars of HOPE

Help create Stars of HOPE wooden stars for victims of a recent natural disaster. This program is suggested for children ages 4 to 18, but open to anyone. All materials will be provided and every child will go home with a coloring book. Americorps Vista and Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies (BRACE) volunteers will guide this program.

Join us this month for a brand new scavenger hunt adventure for the family! Ask a staff member for a scavenger hunt sheet, find the clues in the children’s section and return the sheet for your very own sticker!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and it is time to give thanks for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) challenges. Come by Molino Library to design your own Mayflower ship. Then set sail and find out how well your boat floats from England to America!

Turkey Coloring Contest

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Thursday, Nov. 18 – Friday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m. - 10 a.m. - Molino Library

Does your stuffed animal sit at home sad and lonely every time you visit the library? Then this night is for them! Drop off your fuzzy friend for a sleepover at the library on Thursday, Nov. 18. They will have fun reading spooky stories and playing games with their fellow stuffed animals. All participants will be ready to go home on Friday, Nov. 19.

Young Adult Book Club

This book club is for everyone who loves young adult and teen reads. Join us the fourth Thursday of every month at the Molino Library to discuss a new book! This month, we will be reading Where I End and you Begin by Preston Norton.

GED Instruction at Molino Library

Earn your GED at the Molino Community Center. This is an open enrollment program so that students may enroll anytime during the semester. A current TABE test is required to enroll for the classes. Build, learn and play every day! Join us at Westside Library every Monday – Friday from 4 – 5 p.m. for building with LEGOs! LEGO club is best for children ages five and up. All children under eight years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All LEGOs are provided.

Mystery Book Bundles

Monday, Nov. 1 – Tuesday, Nov. 30 – Westside Library*

Check out a mystery book bundle! Each preschool bag contains three new picture books and youth and young adult bags contain two themed chapter books. All mystery book bundles may be checked out for three weeks.

Thankful Craft

Wednesday, Nov. 10, Noon – 1 p.m. – Westside Library

Come in and draw something you are thankful for this holiday season. Afterwards, we will hang your masterpiece on the wall in the children’s section of the library. All artwork will be displayed until the end of the month. All materials are provided by the library.

Cornucopia Craft

Wednesday, Nov. 17, Noon – 1 p.m. – Westside Library

Stop by the Westside Library and make your own cornucopia craft. Color, cut out and glue your “food” to your cornucopia. Recommended for ages 4 through 11, but open to anyone. All materials are provided.

Festive Turkey Craft

Tuesday, Nov. 23, Noon – 1 p.m. – Westside Library

Bring your family to the Westside Library and make festive turkey crafts for Thanksgiving. Recommended for ages 4 through 11, but open to anyone. All materials provided by the library.
