Escambia County honored Patrick Johnson, Waste Services Director, on his retirement after 37 years of service to Escambia County. Johnson was joined by the Board, his wife and son for a proclamation at the Oct. 21 BCC meeting.
Escambia County commends and congratulates Waste Services Director Patrick Johnson on his retirement, effective Oct. 21, 2021. Johnson served the county for 37 years and his retirement was honored at the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners Meeting on Oct. 21.
Johnson began his career with the county on Nov. 19, 1984, as a Maintenance Worker I, exhibiting a strong work ethic that allowed him to advance quickly through the ranks. During his career, he has achieved promotions to Equipment Operator (I, II, and III), Solid Waste Supervisor, Solid Waste Superintendent, Chief of Landfill Operations, Division Manager and Department Director I. In each of these roles, he has been instrumental in assisting in Escambia County's recovery through a number of storms, rain events and fires.
As Department Director II, Johnson consistently attained certifications from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), including Certified Manager of Landfill Operations, Certified Transfer Station Systems Manager, and Certified Manager of Municipal Solid Waste Management System, and has been the recipient of numerous service awards over the course of his employment with Escambia County. In July, 2017, at Florida State University, the State of Florida and the Florida Center for Public Management awarded Johnson the designation of Certified Public Manager, with all the rights, privileges and honors granted by the State of Florida and the National Certified Public Manager© Consortium.
Interim County Administrator Wes Moreno said, “Pat is a man of extreme character. He is ethical, he is honest, his work ethic is second to none. He has set the bar extremely high for directors and county employees. Pat, I wish you the absolute best in your retirement."
“The future is bright for Waste Services. Thank you so much for allowing me to serve. I want to wish you all well and thank you for all you do," said Johnson.
