Escambia County is proud to recognize National Estuaries Week from Sept. 18-25, 2021. National Estuaries Week is an annual celebration of bays and estuaries, highlighting the social, environmental and economic benefits provided to our community. The week is intended to provide scientific education about estuarine environments and offer collaboration opportunities for resource management. Read the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners proclamation here.

Estuaries are partially enclosed bodies of water where fresh and salt waters mix. They are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world, providing critical habitats for a variety of plants and animals. Seventy-five percent of all recreationally or commercially-caught fishery species will spend part of their lives in an estuary, making estuaries a vital part of Florida's economy. In addition, they protect local communities through water filtration, flood control and shoreline stabilization. By celebrating National Estuaries Week, the county is committed to highlighting a crucial component within Northwest Florida’s vibrant ecosystems

“Estuaries are drivers of our local economy,” says Natural Resources Management Director Chips Kirschenfeld. “By restoring our bays and sounds, we protect the natural resources that make Northwest Florida a desirable place to live, and ensure our communities remain resilient for generations to come.”

In collaboration with the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program, Escambia County is encouraging residents to explore and engage with their local estuaries through a week-long schedule of events.
