Summer Reading Club 2021: Tails and Tales is Here!

Ready to win cool prizes? Read with the West Florida Public Libraries from June 7 to July 31 as we celebrate “Tails and Tales!” Keep track of your minutes in Beanstack for prizes, but be sure to visit our website all summer long to view recorded story times and meet some of our favorite local animal partners via recorded programs! Craft kits, story walks, virtual trivia, virtual mystery habitats and much more will also be available! Summer Reading Club is also available for adults!

Beanstack Challenge: Summer Reading Club 2021: Tails and Tales

Ready to win cool prizes? Read with the West Florida Public Libraries from June 7 to July 31 as we celebrate “Tails and Tales!” Reading challenges are available to children and adults of all ages! Pre-registration begins May 24, 2021.

Summer STEAM at Home Challenge

Watch our pre-recorded online videos and complete the accompanying activities to earn badges. The more badges you earn, the better chance you have of winning a prize! Summer STEAM at Home is for youth ages 0 - 17! Pick up your first Maker Kit starting June 1, then come by every week and pick up that weeks’ Maker Kit! Don’t worry if you miss a week. Previous weeks’ kits will be available all summer long! Log how many activities you complete from June 1 to July 31 in Beanstack, either online at mywfpl.beanstack.org or on the Beanstack app.

STEAM Virtual Challenge

Kick-off Summer STEAM with five virtual challenges that will take you to unexpected places. Features our Family Detective, Lucky Leavers, Birthday Headlines, Ancestry Explorer and Birds Photo Submission activities. Don’t forget to register and chart your progress in Beanstack for a chance to win some cool prizes.

Join Tucker Padgett, a local 4-H participant, as she introduces us to a wealth of farm animals at the local 4-H property. In this recorded program, Tucker will show what it means to take care of many of our favorite farm friends. In the accompanying recorded story time, Tucker reads “Five Fuzzy Chicks,” written by Diane Murray, illustrated by Sydney Hanson, and read with permission from MacMillan publishers. Stop by any branch to pick up your own 4-H bracelet while supplies last.

Animal Friends: STEAM Maker Kit

Pick up your Maker Kit at the branch of the West Florida Public Libraries nearest you! Kit one will include important materials for you to use during Summer STEAM. This kit also features the “Animal Friends” activity kit, which is week one’s craft. This week we will also include links for two videos. The first video features our visit to the 4-H Farm and our second video walks you through the Animal Friends activity kit! Remember to track your progress in Beanstack for a chance to win some fun prizes!

Reno’s Reptiles

Mr. Reno and his reptiles are back in this recorded look at what it means to take care of our scaly friends. There will be alligators, snakes, and lizards, oh my! In the accompanying recorded story time, Miss Stevie with the West Florida Public Libraries reads “Gator Gumbo,” written by Candace Fleming, illustrated by Sally Anne Lambert and read with permission from MacMillan Publishers.

Digging Up the Past: STEAM Maker Kit

Pick up your weekly Maker Kit at your library! Kit Two features the “Digging Up the Past” activity kit, which includes three crafts. This week we will also include links to two videos. The first video features our visit to “Reno's Reptiles” to learn more about our reptilian friends. Our second video is a walkthrough of the crafts in your Digging Up the Past Maker Kit. This week's crafts require items from your first Maker Kit. If you need one or need more supplies, check-in at your local library branch to get it for free! Once you’ve completed this week’s activities, record your progress in Beanstack for a chance to win some spectacular prizes!

Audubon Society

Dr. Caroline Stahala gives us a look at what the Audubon Society does along the Gulf Coast. Nesting season is from March to September. Learn what you can do to help keep your local birds safe! Dr. Stahala reads ”Seagulls Soar” written by April Pulley Sayre, illustrated by Kasia Bogdanska and read with permission from Penguin Random House in the accompanying recorded story time.

Walk on the Wild Side: STEAM Maker Kit

Pick up your Maker Kit at the branch of the West Florida Public Libraries nearest you! This week’s kit features the “Walk on the Wild Side” activity kit, which includes three crafts. This week we will also include links to two videos. The first video will explore Shore Birds with a visit with the Audubon Society and our second video demonstrates the three crafts in your Maker Kit! This weeks’ crafts requires items from your first Maker Kit. If you need one or need a refill, check-in at your local library branch to get it for free! After completing your activities record your progress in Beanstack for a chance to win some incredible prizes!

Escambia County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Posse and Bloodhound

Join Officer Enderson and Officer Matthews as they introduce you to Duke and Sadie, animal officers. Learn what animals can do on the police force in this recorded program. Officer Matthews reads “Police Officers on Patrol” written by Kersten Hamilton, illustrated by R.W. Alley and read with permission from Penguin Random House in the accompanying recorded story time.

Puzzled Out: STEAM Maker Kit

Pick up your Maker Kit at the branch of the West Florida Public Libraries nearest you! This week’s Maker Kit features the “Puzzled Out” activity kit, which includes three crafts. This week we will also include links to two videos. The first video features a visit with the Escambia County Sheriffs’ Department Mounted Posse and Bloodhound. Our second video will walk you through how to complete the three crafts in this week’s Maker Kit. This weeks’ crafts requires items from your first Maker Kit. This summer the West Florida Public Libraries will be hosting several story walks! Come down to the lawns at the Pensacola Library, Tryon Branch Library or Molino Branch Library and walk a story with your family. Several books will be on rotating display between the branches for your family to read and hop, skip, and jump between the pages as you play pretend. The original story walk project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. *Availability of story walks will be dependent on the weather.

Beanstack: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There's more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books, come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

Mystery Book Bundles at Pensacola Library

Mystery Book Bundles are available for preschool, middle grade and young adult readers. Preschool bags contain three picture books. Middle grade and young adult bags contain two themed chapter books. Stop by Pensacola Public Library and let the kids play their hearts out on our outdoor musical busy board. Ever had the kids pull out the pots and pans and play garage band in the kitchen? Well, we still have the kitchen band but it's outside. Check out a pair of flip flop drumsticks from the Circulation desk and go to town as a family.

In honor of the 200th Anniversary of the exchange of flags between Spain and the United States, the West Florida Public Libraries will be highlighting local authors in a social media spotlight. Featured items will include both fiction and nonfiction titles for both Adults and Youth.

Mindful Journal

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life.

Creative Writing Journal

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with monthly themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem.

Mystery Book Bundles are for children, teens and adults to check out at the Southwest Branch Library. Your mystery bag will have three or four books that have something in common, indicated by the label on the bag. The bag is yours to keep for your next trip to the library (we’ll keep the label to re-use it), but no peeking inside the bag until you’re ready to read! Not available on Monday, May 31

Nothing says summer time like sandals and the month of June! Swing by Century Branch Library and pick up your ‘Blingy Beach Sandals’ kit which provides all the bling you need to decorate your favorite beach sandals. Take it home or stay and play! Our new outside seating area is a great place to decorate your flip-flops here at the library! Bring your flip-flops and bling away!

STEAM Activity Kits: No Sew T-Shirt Bag

Tote bags are a must have for the summer months. Did you know you can take an old t-shirt and ‘make’ a no-sew tote? Come to Century Branch Library throughout the month of June and we will show you how! Our easy to follow directions will guide you step by step on how to create your own. Dig out that old shirt and have some fun!

STEAM Activity Kits: Straw Rockets!

NASA will be launching a Lunar Lander to collect scientific data on the moon this June. To celebrate, Century Branch Library will be offering straw rocket kits so you can build and launch a rocket of your own! Straw rockets are fun to make and a great way to learn how rockets fly!
