Escambia County 4-H is proud to announce that the intermediate (ages 11-13) 4-H meat judging team placed first at the state 4-H meat judging contest on April 17, 2021 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The senior (ages 14+) 4-H meat judging team placed second in their division. The intermediate team included A.T. Bridgers, Laney Clarke, Tucker Padgett and Hunter Taylor, and the senior team included Alan B., Gracie Meredith and Lilly Warne. J.M. Tate Future Farmers of America also competed at their meat judging career development event and they placed fourth in the FFA competition.
Participants identified 40 retail cuts and placed six retail, primal, carcass classes. The 4-H meat judging program develops life skills through activities related to the processing of beef, pork, and lamb, including retail identification, factors relating to meat quality and cooking methods. Participants developed an understanding and appreciation of the basic scientific principles involved in eating and cooking quality, nutritional value and consumer appeal of meat. 4-H members on the team also learned life skills such as effective decision-making, critical thinking, goal setting and teamwork.
"The Escambia County 4-H meat judging teams would like to thank The Butcher Shoppe on Langley in Pensacola for allowing the team to practice at their facilities," said 4-H Youth Development Agent Brian Estevez. "Community support like this helps the Escambia County 4-H program remain successful. Thank you for supporting the youth in Escambia County and helping us win another state contest!"
Last year, intermediate and senior 4-H meat judging teams both placed first at the state 4-H meat judging contest held virtually.
